A recent MSNBC article writes about how doing exercise or yoga can cause spontaneous emotional releases. The article relates many anecdotes of people breaking into tears from just moving. The article does not give any explanation why this happens.
Essentially, when emotions are unable to be expressed they are stored in our soft tissue – not much different than us storing our crap in the garage. One day you decide to clean out the garage. As you pick up every piece of what now has become junk you remember why you stuffed it in the garage.
Often when we move our bodies in a way it has not moved for a long time, we experience the junk that we stored in it. This flash back can be scary. It also can be tremendously healing. For more than 30 years, I have supported clients and students in allowing themselves to have these spontaneous releases. In every case, some good came from the release.
It is after one of these releases that our mind and body is able to move on to a better place. Old pain often disappears and as the MSNBC article mentioned, allowing joy to return.
Seek out safe places to allow your old junk to release. Honor your mind and body’s innate healing process. Release.
